Re: IB Physics Ideas
Our list from Friday!
Properties of a running shoe
Properties/durability of a roller coaster at Boomers
Anti-frictional material
Explosion
How does a car react to different grades of fuel?
Determine factors that allow someone to go faster down a waterslide
Food for thought – not eating/eating/energy drink on different days and then taking a basic test
Reusable vs displosable bags – energy conserved?
How does the body conform to throwing different types of sports balls
How does the human body react to energy drinks

Where we stand as of 3:28 pm on Monday's class...
The class sits anxiously in class, awaiting a unanimous decision to be reached. Neel sits haphazardly, rubbing one finger on temple and embarking on wacky tangents about how physics applies to the topic. Jeff, biting nails, is concerned about the concept of the "Food for Thought" experiment. Kyle births the moniker "Mentos become Pepsi" in an effort to add new meaning to the explosion concept. Min Ho observes from the sidelines, secretly brewing his next whirlwind idea. More to follow...

Lake Depth
Hey everyone-
Ms. Heath e-mailed me back and said that she called NB's former scuba instructor, and he said the lake is only about 15 feet deep in the middle, which is about 4.5 meters.

Notes from project planning
Hello, here's everything I wrote up today from our design-planning discussion! I'll post the pictures of the board, too
Determining Pressure (unit = Pascal = Nm-2)
Formula:
- Force/Area of surface
- p = gdh (g = gravity, d = density, h = height)
- note: Upthrust, if necessary, = weight of displaced fluid
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does pressure affect the O2 levels in a body of water?
Independent Variable: pressure
Dependent Variable: O2 levels
Controls: light (type and amount)
Variables:
-minerals
-organisms
-temperature
-pH
-current
Experiment plans: Tap water vs. lake water? Create a “fake lake" in order to better control variables?
Ideas to Consider
-Pole with syringe attached at one end and a line attached to the other to pull it back up
-Take water samples at different locations?
-How will D.O. be affected by photosynthetic organisms?
-Must test for location of photic zone
-What is: Temperature? Current? Salt conc. & pH? in the lake
-How will we know whether the increase/decrease in O2 levels is due to change in pressure or change in temperature?
-Dissolved oxygen
-Pressure chamber
-60cc syringe (use ziploc bags with oxygen squeezed out)
Apparatus List
-PVC pipe (with meters marked)
-Line
-Boats (3)
-Ziploc bags
-D.O. probes
-60cc syringes
-Camera (waterproof)
HYPOTHESIS: The O2 levels will have a direct negative relationship with the pressure in the lake.
NEED TO FIND: Depth of lake.
Measurements to be taken on: Tuesday, 2/1 (?)

were any of you guys able to find out how deep the lake is?

Lake Depth
Yeah I posted it yesterday when Ms. Heath e-mailed me back - 15 feet, approximately 4.5 meters.

Re: IB Physics Ideas
so should we take a reading every 3 feet (total of 5) and take 3-5 readers per increment?

Neel Desai's preferred choices
Hey everyone!!!! Since I'm not going to be here Monday, let it be known that my top choices are the Introduction (including the variables) and the Conclusion/Evaluation (My first choice.) Also, can somebody let me know what transpired on Monday in class? That is all..... Thank You

Re: IB Physics Ideas
Just as a "refresher" -- here are the ideas we came up with for the presentation:
PRESENTATION NOTES
o Introduction
o Research Question
o Variables: IV, DV, constants, controlled and uncontrollable variables
o Method for data collection (includes apparatus list) – need one "water" person, one "land" person
o Hypothesis
o Data tables/graphs
o Conclusion/Evaluation
o Improvements
o Pictures of process
o Sample calculations

Notes
Ideal Column – UNIFORM substance. So no physical impurities, no current, no sunlight
o 2 m long
o PVC Pipe
o Stopper for bottom of pipe
Depths To Be Measured for Ideal Water (2 trials at each depth, 3 if possible)
o surface
o 0.5 m
o 1.0 m
o 1.5 m
o 2.0 m
Teams for Procedure Day:
o Aqua: Taking measurements
Erik, Jessica
o Terra: Transporting bags
Harison, Kyle, Bruce
o HQ: Data analysis
Olivia, Neel: Masses
Min Ho, Jeff: D.O. probes
We do not plan to calibrate the probes, which means that we will be testing for a change in D.O. rather than the D.O. itself.
D.O. Probe Warmup Procedure: MUST LET PROBE SIT FOR 10 MINUTES IN WATER BEFORE EXPERIMENTING WITH IT.

Re: IB Physics Ideas
are we making a DO vs. Pressure graph? i think that the DO goes on the y axis because it's the dependent variable..
