Oxygen Levels in Lake vs Other Water Empty Chem

Research Question
Does temperature effect dissolved oxygen content in water ?

Variables
Independent variable- temperature (°C)
Dependant variable- amount of dissolved Oxygen (mg/ L)
Control- tap water

Constants

Same amount of water in each sample
All samples heated for the same amount of time
All trials repeated the same number of times

Hypothesis

If the temperature of lake water is increased, then the dissolved oxygen level will decrease because it is an open system and oxygen content will be lost in the form of steam.

Materials
Sample of tap water and lake water (2000 mL of each)
dissolved oxygen probe
Temperature probe
apparatus with clamp
hot plate
two 2000 mL flasks
parafilm
six 300 mL beakers
a Vernier Lab Quest
a computer with logger pro software.

Procedure
Collect 2000 mL samples of lake water and tap water in two separate flasks .
Covering with parafilm, let sit over night so both samples reach room temperature.
Pour 200 mL of lake water into a separate beaker.
Turn on the lab quest and allow it to warm up for about 5-10 minutes.
The lab quest should be connected both to the temperature probe and the dissolved oxygen probe, as well as a computer with logger pro.
With a temperature probe, measure the initial temperature( in °C) of the 200 mL sample .
Turn on the hot plate and allow it to warm up.
Place a dissolved oxygen probe in the 200 mL sample and measure the initial amount of dissolved oxygen (in mg/L) in the sample.
9. Using an apparatus (reference attached photo), position the temperature probe and the dissolved oxygen probe so that they can both measure temperature and dissolved oxygen content of the sample during heating.
10. Place the 200 mL sample of lake water on the hot plate.
As the sample heats, The temperature probe and the dissolved oxygen probe should now be directly recording the temperature change and change in dissolved oxygen to logger pro through the lab quest
Save and analyze data, record any observations
Repeat steps 3-12 for a total of five completed trials
Repeat steps 3-12, this time substituting lake water for tap water. Complete a total of five trials for the tap water as well.

Initial Data
Initial temperature of lake water: 66.7ºF or 19.3ºC
Temperature after sitting over two nights or 19ºC
Initial temperature of tap water: 70.8ºF or 21.5ºC
Temperature after sitting over two nights 19ºC
Initial Temperature of Lake water = 20.5 ºC
Initial Oxygen Level of Lake Water = 5.3 mg/L
